BARN ROOSTER WEATHERVANE: CUSTOM COPPER

The ancient Greeks believed the Rooster rose to attention and saluted the sun every morning with a hearty cry, symbolizing victory over night. As such, the Rooster was considered a solar emblem to the Greeks, and was adopted as a sacred sign to the god Apollo as well as Zeus, Persephone and Attis.

ARTHUR'S ROOSTER WEATHERVANE

Arthur's Copper Rooster Weathervane flys in Washington, Connecticut USA
Custom-Designed Copperwork by Al Ferris, Jr.

Arthur was very determined to find a rooster in a particular stance. He paid particular attention to whether the head would be looking up or forward. We traded a few sketches, sought outside advice, and met at a terrific pose. The head, body and tail designs came from three different birds.

This is also the first time I have used a hole to create the eye. It gives the same appearence from each side, and changes in color with the changes in weather. Blue sky, blue eyes. Arthur's vane nearly disappears when viewed head on.

Trivia 101: The Rooster seen on a weathervane is steeped in symbolic meanings that deal with watchful vigilance against evil, as weathervanes are commonly seen atop churches. This particular vane is 49" long. The rooster itself is 20" high.
